Thankfulness – Day Seventeen

I’m thankful for the people I work with. I think it’s pretty telling that I’ve been working in the office for two years now and still really love my job. That’s not to say I jump out of bed every morning with a big smile on my face, excited to get my day started. Then again, I didn’t jump out of bed with a big smile on my face the morning we had to be at the airport at 4:30 for our trip to Hawaii, either. And I was thoroughly looking forward to that!

Today my department took me to the Olive Garden for an early birthday lunch. I know what you’re thinking. “Of course you’re thankful for the people you work with, Jenster. They fed you.” That’s true, but I would have gotten to them at some point during November so why not bring them up today? Are you catching what I’m throwing?

But I like all the people I work with, not just the children’s ministry department. And lest those non-churchers of you think church office folk are sticks in the mud and speak of nothing but spiritual matters all day then I have this to say to you. Au contraire.  Why just yesterday there was a rather heated debate regarding Lionel Richie’s vocal and dancing talents (of which I say he has vocal talent, but lame songs, and no dancing talent). Stimulating conversation!

The other day I said something really stupid. Not like usual Jenster stupid. I mean really stupid.  I asked why they even keep me around and Shannon came up with the 3C’s: Comic relief; Coffee; and Chocolate. Apparently my ineptitude is always good for a laugh; making coffee is my greatest talent; and I almost always have both dark and milk chocolate in my drawer. She and Terri and I decided my job is secure.

The thing I’m most thankful for about the people I work with is their genuine care and concern for others. Care for each other; care for the people in the church; care for the people in our community; care for the people in our region and care for the people in the world. After all, isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?

And I’m extra-special thankful that I get to work with them!
