Cold is Relative

I have one of those really cool bedside clocks which not only reflects the time on the ceiling; it alternates with the outside temperature. When I went to bed last night it was 12 degrees. Every time I rolled over I would glance at the temperature and watched it dropped down to 5.

Of course I couldn’t make Taylor walk the half a block to the bus stop at 6:55 when it had only warmed up to 8 degrees with a wind chill of -7. That’s -21.66 Celsius! I’m pretty sure I’ve never been anywhere so cold, making this all kind of exciting.

Then I turn on Good Morning America and there are places with wind chills in the negative 40’s. Duluth was -42, which interestingly is only -41.11 Celsius. All of a sudden -7 isn’t so impressive.

We’ve had one decent snow this winter and it only lasted about four hours. The glorious 2.5 inches was washed away as the snow turned to rain. Talk about lame. It’s not right to have cold weather and no snow. What happened to the blizzard conditions of Valley Forge? Not that I want to eat my shoes because the weather prohibits me from buying groceries. I just want some snow. One decent snow where we’re stuck in the house for a day and the kids go sledding. That’s all I’m asking.

***By the way, did you know Valley Forge only had about 6 inches of snow on the ground that terrible winter? But it was bitterly cold, cold enough to cover the Schuylkill River with ice.***

I know those of you in the frozen tundra (Chicago is part of the tundra, right?) are laughing at me and that’s okay. My skin is thick and I can take it. Oh! We’ve warmed up to -4!!

  1. You only want the snow cause you lived in Sunny Southern CA or Mild AR… 🙂 Did Todd ever get his snow blower? If not, I bet he’s not wanting the snow!

  2. I’m all about the snow and this year I guess we’ve had record amounts (I remember last year having lots of snow also but I guess it wasn’t record breaking). Course I remember the year the Toronto mayor called in the army to get the streets cleared. It was such a laughable move and I believe he got lots of flack for it. I mean, really, we’re Canadian, we know snow ;)And the windchill here last night was -30 degrees Celcius. I decided to trust them on that and not poke my head out ;)And I’m always up for more snow!CindyS

  3. Brrrr! I guess I am pretty lame complaining when it gets down to 55 degrees. It is so beautiful here, 75 today! I am sending you some sunshine since you can’t have snow… Can you feel it? =)

  4. Terri – Todd got a “snowblower” nearly 16 years ago, but it has an attitude and talks back.Jodi_Lee – Thanks. Now my tongue hurts.Cindy – I wanna be where you are!!Tanya – EXACTLY!Deb – Thanks! Actually, we’re having beautiful sunshine – not a cloud in the sky. It’s just freezing, that’s all. :o)Kris – I like winter. I just wish we actually had it. lol

  5. It’s an icy 70 degrees here. Brrr! We have so few really cold days here we rarely have to bring out heavy coats. Although I, like you, wish for just ONE SNOW DAY to have an extra break from school, etc. I shouldn’t complain…and yet I do! I’m going to take a nap.

  6. Katybug – Hope the nap was great!Gretchen – We’ve had a lot of rain. The temps are always above freezing when it rains. We actually had snow flurries yesterday, but not enough to do anything.

  7. Cold is definitely relative!!! We are “freezing” down South if it gets down around 40. LOLWe have had one tiny snow this year…but we were so excited because it’s much more than we usually get!!

  8. Sooooooooo. Is this your way of trying to pull an invitation to visit me? OK, OK! Wanna come for a visit? Our high today was almost 60. Tomorrow it will be just … brrrrr … 48. Then Wed, 60. :DC’mon down!!

  9. sheesh. I agree, I just want one big snow. I finally have a job where I am not required to work when it snows, and I want the option to stay home n my jammies and read, or drink cocoa, or do nothing but watch bad lifetime that too much to ask for? it sure was cold today . . .DP’s folks in WI said it was -17 yesterday.

  10. We’ve had a ton of snow here in Boise. My husband came in the other day after shoveling the walk again and pointed out that “amazingly enough our snowshovel is unisex and works for men AND women.” Thank goodness it’s starting to warm up so I won’t have to find out for myself.

  11. Not that I want to eat my shoes because the weather prohibits me from buying groceries. Now I am ruined for the rest of the night. I can’t concentrate. I am picturing you eating your shoes which is even more hilarious because I don’t know what you look like so I am picturing the you of my imagination on the frozen lake of my imagination eating your shoes of my imagination.

  12. those of you who want snow are crazy!I’m buried in it!!! 🙂 But I understand the desire for it. Snow is pretty. But it’s best when the temp is 31 degrees and the sun is shining.Stay warm!!

  13. I fed horses while my hubby was gone a couple of weeks ago in -40F with a 10 MPH wind – that made it feel like -60F!! Cold weather is okay for a short period of time and then it gets old. If you want cold and snow, just head on over to my house. I have plenty to go around!!

  14. It warmed up here to only -21 Celsius. Practically a heat wave considering the last two weeks. LOL!But, on the flip side, I don’t do the heat. It can get excruciatingly hot here as well, 30+ (rarely), but summer only lasts two months at most.

  15. Kind of makes me all nostalgic for our Minnesota days. I actually miss the snow and cold. I don’t think we got down below 25 once this year, and there was just a dusting of snow one day that melted away. ;O( If we want snow, we have to go to the Mountains.

  16. Yeah, welcome to my deep freeze!!! And more snow on the way tonight and tomorrow – and we’re breaking records from 1950 — and there’s no place left to put the stuff when it’s cleared. I’m ready to dig a hole and hibernate !! I’m hoping the hole takes me south!!!!
